The Dubsmash story

Dubsmash it is!

Say it with a Dubsmash, a selfie video, the cool new lip syncing app, the dubbing app or the new viral app.

Everyone is using Dubsmash. The reason people are using this app is because the app is cool, not because it is going viral. And honestly, it really is uber cool!

It came into the picture on November 19, 2014 and was developed by some kind folks in Germany. In a week’s time it was number one spot on the apps chart. Today it has 50,000,000+ users across 192 countries. The number will grow by the time you finish reading this.

A little bit of digging told us where users are sharing the dubs most.  Twitter topped the chart last month, followed by Vine, Instagram, and Facebook respectively.

The crucial thing to note here is that Dubsmash is not a social media channel, it’s an app, and you share your dubs on your social channels. It made me think, what if it were a platform, so people would have communicated through Dubs. It would have been so cool!

How has Dubsmash reached Dubbing Heights?

So why is it so successful? It’s quite simple really:

It’s cool: Who does not want to be a part of this phenomenon?

It’s free: What comes free today?

It’s easily sharable: Its short, crisp and funny, definitely sharable.

Variety: Users are spoilt for choices. FRIENDS, HIMYM, classic Bollywood dialogues, cult Hollywood statements, Dubsmash has it all.

User friendly: One can easily share the dub with a swipe. No complications.

And I read this somewhere: “Dubsmash is popular because it appeals to us in the same way emojis do: it lets us say what we want without really saying it.” Quite true, isn’t it?

What might kill it? Monotony. People probably will eventually get bored and will lose interest. Not now but at some point they will. Dubsmash will have to devise a strategy to sustain this virality and user interest.

Dubsmash has also played with fire on the legal front. Using copyrighted audio clips which is somebody’s intellectual property might have caused trouble. But for now this has been taken care of. Read more about it here.

DUBSMASH: Starring the Stars

Our Stars are using Dubsmash just right!

She gave a 10 second preview of her song! Yes, that’s right, now all that the users needed was Dubsmash to find it out. Now who does not want to know what is exclusively available on internet?

There were other celebs, who’ve simply been awesome at Dubsmash.

Adam Levine dubbing “Pulp Fiction” lines, isn’t he too cute to pull that off?

Can anyone beat Hugh Jackman? Nobody!

And it’s not just Hollywood, Our Bollywood stars have been caught up in the fever too.

BRANDS: Get in here!

Universal Pictures tied up with Dubsmash to promote Hollywood’s much anticipated blockbuster ‘Furious 7’
The most popular dialogues from the movie through the app along with an integrated social media contest were brought into picture.

USA Network is the first one to use it.

The channel will feature 30 of the most popular sound bites from the first two seasons on the app. Read more here.

Social causes are also being addressed here:

Peruvian Celebrities embraced Dubsmash to address the Country’s child abuse issues with the campaign #HablaPorEllos. Read more.

But this is just the start.

There is so much more potential for brands. They can bring exclusive content on the app, run contests, leverage the virality and if they do it right, they have the power to break the internet!

PS: Just a little piece of advice, do not download Dubsmash 2, it’s a Malware and has been taken down from the app store. You can still download it online, but don't.

Happy dubbing!
