Principles of good writing

  1. Always prefer the short word to the long one

  2. Choose the simple rather than the complex

  3. Don't leave the reader to excavate nuggets from a mountain of words

  4. If the words are doing a worthwhile job, leave them alone

  5. Be specific. Use detail, not generalisation

  6. Relate everything to people

  7. Use original thoughts and observation, not clichés and jargon

  8. Do not assume knowledge

  9. Why are you using that adjective?

  10. Write actively - not passively
