5 simple steps for website owners to begin SEO

Optimizing your website for search engines to rank you higher is a very effective way for you to get relevant organic traffic to your site. SEO helps businesses get more traffic and improve your website’s position in Search Engines.

1. Make a website easy to navigate

Create a website for users, not for search engines. The better the navigation, the better overall experience of a user will be. This will lower the bounce rate, increase customer engagement and the time spent on a page. Text links should be used to optimize navigation for users.

2. Page titles

Each page has one title, which can be found within your HTML code tags <title> </title>. The page title tells search engines what the page is all about. It is also the blue text which users see and click on the search engine itself, like Google, Bing, Yahoo, so it should be interesting, engaging and relevant to the visitor. Each page on your site should have a unique Title, which should not be of more than 70 characters (titles consisting of more characters will not be fully shown in search results).

3. SEO Friendly URLs

A URL will be of the structure: www.yoursite.com/pagename.html. The purpose of a unique URL is to help search engines understand what the page is all about. Consistent, relevant URLs also look attractive in search engine results, and can be important in driving the message to the onlooker about the content of the page.

4. Meta Description Tag

Meta description is the ‘description’ of a page. It is an HTML attribute that provide concise explanations of the contents of web pages. Meta descriptions are used on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) to display preview snippets of a particular site. Each page on your site should be unique and be only up to 190 characters which provides a summary of the page. It is important not to stuff keywords in the Meta description, since the site can be penalised as spam.

5. Describe Your Images

Images cannot be automatically recognized by Search Engines and need assistance from your end to help them understand what the image is about. Use “alt” attribute to describe your images and add citations below the image.

Search engines have grown from the days of link building rat race to them almost thinking like a human. Almost. There are certain ‘signals’ which we all need to inculcate in our website to be in search engine's good books. This increases our page and domain score, ranks our pages higher and provide an engaging experience to the user.
